How to Apply Ink to an Embossing Folder

How to apply ink to an embossing folder is a question I get asked quite a lot. It is a technique I would try from time to time with varied results. I wasn’t overly keen on doing it as I would waste a lot of card due to substandard results. Yes I am a bit of a perfectionist!!!

Then I worked out, in my opinion, the type of embossing folder design has a lot to do with how well this technique works. Using the Timber embossing folder gives a terrific result that looks like a piece of timber. I feel because it is a finer detail design you get better ink application going from the embossing folder to the card stock. Larger designs leave areas where the ink doesn’t transfer giving a substandard result.

For this card I used Crumb Cake card and Crumb Cake ink. Apply the ink by swiping across the inside of the embossing folder design, on the side that doesn’t have the Stampin’ Up! logo. Carefully lay your card piece on top of the ink and close. Run through your machine, I use a Stampin’ Cut & Emboss machine. Check out the result below.

How great and realistic does that look! I then used my embossed piece to create a birthday card for my son who is a carpenter by trade. Combining the Timber embossed card piece with the Vintage Tools stamp set made a perfect combination for his card. The tools were stamped onto Very Vanilla card and die cut using the best die set out, Stylish Shapes. Using a blending brush I added some Crumb Cake ink to “age” the piece. I added Natural Finish ribbon along with some Rustic Metallic Dots to finish the card.

And not to be left forgotten I also made the effort to decorate the card inside. Something I am woeful at doing generally!!!

The Vintage Tools stamp set has so much detail in the stamp images. They stamp up beautifully showing all the detail. I made a couple more cards while I was playing with the set. I’ll share them in the next couple of posts. I particularly love how these stamps look when stamped in black ink on white card.

So now you have the technique on how to apply ink to an embossing folder. Go and create! If you enjoy using embossing folders have a look at this post using the new Cane Weave embossing folder.
