My torn effect On the Horizon card creation came about after seeing a post on our Stampin’ Up! company run Demonstrator Facebook group. Valarie McDonald shared her creations with the Stampin’ Up! community of Demonstrators on our Demonstrator Planing Place Facebook group. The post happened while I was away on my recent craft retreat with team members. Everyone saw the post and loved the concept so we had a challenge that all of us on retreat had to create the card technique using the On The Horizon Designer Series Papers.
This is a really deceptively simple technique to do!
Here’s how to create the torn effect on your cards.
- First select the area on your paper design you wish to expose.
- Decide where you want the torn section to be placed on your card and start tearing. Tear the paper towards you to get the right torn layer appearing uppermost. Tear about three quarters the way across your card piece.
- Once you have done the two tears, tear off half the card flap you created with the tearing. Taking this excess card off reduces the bulk of the final paper roll you will create.
- Tightly roll up the remaining card flap until you reach the end of the flap. Unroll slightly, add a strip of adhesive onto the card piece beside where the roll ends, roll up the remainder paper flap and press the roll onto the adhesive to hold it in place.
- Position your selected paper piece under the rolled card mat making sure the edges align.
- Attach the card and patterned paper mat to your folded base card.
- Add your greeting and any extra stamped images or embellishments you desire.
I chose to keep my card simple and let the technique stand out and the papers make the statement. The On the Horizon 6×6 papers have such evocative images in their abstract designs. My first card I only added the sentiment, which I think works beautifully with the paper image I used. The greeting if you are interested is from Nature’s Harvest. Beautiful words and a beautiful font.
For my second card pictured above, I added the stamped flight of birds. The stamp image is from the matching On the Horizon stamp set.
This card technique will be bulky to post so you may want to reserve these cards for face to face gift giving. The other option would be to tear off the rolled up paper and leave just the torn appearance like you have ripped off a bandaid to expose what is below.
Go ahead and give this technique a go. It is currently doing the rounds as everyone is jumping onboard the torn effect on their cards!
The On the Horizon papers are not carrying over so are only available until June 30 when the Mini Catalogue retires. So make sure you order your On the Horizon papers before the end of June. As we get closer to that date if stocks run out they will not be replaced. Don’t miss out!
I hope you give the torn effect using On The Horizon papers a try.
Happy Crafting!
